US-China Relations & Business Implications for Southeast Asia

12 May 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm

Webinar

The Chamber was truly honoured to host Mr. George Yeo, Senior Advisor to Brunswick Group and former Singapore Cabinet Minister again today. The topic was US-China relations and their implications for businesses operating in Southeast Asia. Predictably, with someone of George’s stature, it was a tour de force.

The immaturity of the US seeing China as the bogeyman, unravelling President Nixon’s sole foreign policy coup which achieved positive relations nearly 50 years ago, was one theme. Another was China can only be destroyed by itself because of the endemic corruption at the heart of how Confucianism is practised in the country. Again, the dangerous ambiguity of the Biden Administration’s policy towards Taiwan is a cause for concern. The unity of ASEAN is greater than we might think. These and many other themes were raised by our guest and by the audience in a dialogue moderated by Mr. Will Carnwath, Partner, Head of Singapore, Brunswick Group.

The Chamber would like to thank George for his time and insights, Will for moderating and for the entire Brunswick team for enabling this collaboration. Last, but not least, thanks too to our very engaged audience.
