Talent, Pragmatism and Policy

Webinar

The catalyst for today’s webinar is a wonderful book written by former civil servant, Mr. Terence Ho who is now Associate Professor in Practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. His book “Refreshing the Singapore System” should be required reading in all schools and in all businesses. Singapore’s socio-economic policies are all designed to uphold the social compact and support businesses and the economy.

Terence gave us an excellent presentation both in terms of content and structure. He set out Singapore’s economic and social development so far, the structural challenges it now faces as an advanced economy, the implications of a rapidly ageing society and commented on forthcoming policies and potential options. Following his presentation, we had a meaningful dialogue covering questions and concerns around talent, pragmatism, social inclusion, mobility and integration. One key conclusion is more businesses need to step up and co-create and co-sustain a positive workplace culture with their teams. This would reduce the need for policy intervention, increase social harmony, demonstrate fairness in hiring and promotion, facilitate integration and ensure more commercial success.

The Chamber thanks Terence for the clarity of his thinking and the excellence of his presentation. We congratulate him on his book which is not only easy to read but a pleasure to read.
