Following Malaysia’s ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan’s historic electoral victory in May 2018, the Chamber organised a country briefing to review some of the reforms that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and his administration have implemented in the past 6 months. The briefing was conducted by Control Risks, a specialist global risk consultancy.

Associate Director Harrison Cheng, spoke about the country’s political and economic situation and institutional changes. He also commented on potential changes in regulatory climate in the near to mid-term and the implications for businesses. Senior Partner John Macpherson discussed how multinational businesses operating in Malaysia or who have plans to invest in Malaysia can prepare for these anticipated policy and regulatory changes. Here are 3 tips he shared:

• Engage the regulatory stakeholders to establish effective government relations
• Carry out due diligence when selecting third parties and joint venture partners to work with and ensure that they are compliant especially in the areas of tax, environment and data protection.
• Conduct scenario planning and risk assessment before making business investment decisions so as to reduce the likelihood and impact of a crisis and to ease the path to recovery

A big thank you to the Control Risks team for their in-depth analyses and generously sharing their expertise with fellow members!
