Impact of AI on Climate Action – Solution & Challenge

10 October 2024 @ 10:00 am - 11:30am

We had a fascinating insight this morning into AI and its positive impact on climate action in our fourth edition of the 2024 Sustainability Event Series exclusively sponsored by the Chamber’s Principal Strategic Partner the Singapore American School. Guest speaker Mr. Spencer Low, Google’s Head of Regional Sustainability in APAC, delivered a presentation which covered AI solutions, their challenges in terms of energy and water use by data centres and how these challenges can be mitigated. Thanks to Spencer and thoughtful comments and questions from the audience, here’s what we learnt:

🤖 AI can help mitigate up to 10% of gross global greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions by 2030.

🤖 AI can help provide better information, improve predictions of extreme weather events and recommend energy optimization solutions.

🤖 By combining weather, satellite and flight data, AI can predict and optimize flight paths to minimize condensation trails (“contrails”) and reduce the impact on global warming in the aviation industry.

🤖 The environmental impact of data centres can be mitigated by transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy and operational efficiency and by restoring water catchment areas.

🤖 As a society, we all have the collective responsibility to be mindful of how we use AI tools so we can collectively reduce energy consumption for a more sustainable future.

Many thanks, once again, to Spencer for his expert sharing, to Singapore American School for its generous support and our audience for a thought-provoking discussion. Do keep a lookout for the fifth and last edition of the 2024 Sustainability Event Series coming up in November.
