Dear Members and Friends
Of
all the many anniversaries which
will fall next year, the most
important one for this Chamber
is the 60th anniversary of the
founding of the Republic of
Singapore (SG60). How do we plan
to mark the Diamond Jubilee of
this unique country?
Singapore is unique because it
is an outlier of good governance
with a zero tolerance for
corruption. It is unique because
of the equality of its citizens
and residents under the law. It
is unique because of the
equality of opportunity provided
to all citizens regardless of
race, language or religion. It
is unique as an example of what
can be achieved in a multiracial
and multi-religious country;
when people work together in
social harmony and peace to
create jobs and maintain a
vibrant economy. Singapore
deserves to be celebrated every
day and none of us who live here
should take what we have
collectively worked for, and
contributed to, for granted.
Singapore and its citizens and
residents are beacons of light
in a troubled and fractious
world. A world in which far too
many people do not enjoy access
to good governance or to social
harmony or to peace. All of us
should cherish what we have
collectively built and spend
each day working to sustain it.
SICC will mark SG60 in two
ways. First, we will launch a
new event series entitled:
“Celebrating SG60 -
Celebrating Business Success.”
This
series will honor the local and
global businesses that have made
Singapore their home base,
showcasing their journeys,
achievements and contributions
to the nation’s economic success
and its quality of life. The
events will also enable learning
and the exchange of
perspectives, highlighting the
resilience, innovation and
leadership of businesses across
various sectors. To complement
this new event series, we will
launch a podcast that delves
into the stories behind each
featured business. We will be
selecting outstanding businesses
that continue to make a
significant impact in Singapore.
Stay tuned for more updates!
The second, and equally
important way, in which this
Chamber will commemorate SG60 is
bringing you and local
communities together to achieve
positive social impact. Building
on the example and success of
SwedCham, one idea is for you to
collaborate with community
gardeners to achieve more
sustainable and pleasant
gardens. Another idea is for you
to adopt an active ageing center and work with its leaders to
provide a greater variety of
activities for its
beneficiaries. Let me know if
you are interested to be part of
these initiatives.
Alternatively, what plans do you
have for SG60 and how might your
Chamber help? Majulah Singapura!
Yours faithfully
