MEMBERCONNECT

Dear Members and Friends

Normally, I’d write an intro for an article submitted by a member or partner. This one from SPD needs no intro. It says it all. Please read it and act.

This is the first of a quarterly series of articles on the various aspects of inclusive hiring of PwDs and the benefits it can bring to your businesses.

Have a great week ahead.

Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
Chief Executive

Has it crossed your mind that inclusive hiring can not only meet your manpower needs but also improve your company profile?

People with disabilities (PwDs) can work efficiently if given the opportunities, adequate training and support, such as assistive technology and job redesign. They can help alleviate the manpower challenges that companies may be facing. In addition, they bring diversity to the workforce, fresh perspectives and experiences, as well as encourage the sharing of ideas and innovation at the workplace. Valuing differences among workers can also create a collaborative environment that can contribute to companies’ competitiveness and help them stay relevant.

Like environmental sustainability, inclusive hiring is a valued social cause that improves the image and profile of companies – inclusive and fair hiring draws people to the company. A company’s corporate culture can evolve to be an empathetic and appreciative one, and there is potential to attract new customer segments when their practices and premises are accessible and welcoming to all.

Not sure where to start? This is where local disability-focused charity SPD comes in. The organization has been around since 1964 and now serves more than 10,000 PwDs every year through more than 20 programmes and services, one of which is the Employment Support Programme (ESP). Supported by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, the ESP not only helps persons with physical and sensory disabilities in securing employment, but also assists and partners employers in the hiring process, on-boarding and the application for Government funding.

For more information about inclusive hiring, please contact SPD’s ESP at [email protected].
