Dear
Members and Friends
The extraordinary, attempted,
and then called off, mutiny in
Russia recently underscores how
conflict can bring about
unexpected consequences. For a
short time there was a
distinctly 1917 whiff about
events. Back then an equally,
unnecessary war caused the
collapse of the Imperial regime
in Russia and, one year later,
those of Austria-Hungary and
Germany. War is always a
catalyst for change and the
changes wrought by war are not
always what those in power at
the outset had in mind.
Of course, change is a constant
for all of us in business but
what is not always constant is
the speed of change. There is no
doubt we are living at a time of
elevated contestation between
the great powers when relations
can be affected by balloons and
near misses in the Taiwan
Straits. The 24 hour news cycle
exacerbates the speed at which
things happen and the reactions
to events. When you think about
it, today’s sabre rattling is
not all that dissimilar to the
decade before 1914 and the
outbreak of the catastrophic
First World War.
No
wonder you have asked us for
more coverage of geopolitics as
you, your Boards and risk
managers evaluate your
strategies and tactics for
business success in what are
more uncertain times than any of
us would have predicated a few
years ago.
As always, we
listen to our members and look
forward to an engaging dialogue
on 19 July with Minister Vivian
Balakrishnan, Minister for
Foreign Affairs. Do join us to
ask your questions and to share
your perspectives. Scroll down
for more information on this and
other upcoming events.
Wishing you all a good week
ahead and to all our USA members
and friends,
Happy 4th of July!
Yours faithfully
Victor
