Dear
Members and Friends
Maaf Zahir Dan Batin is a Malay phrase you will hear and see many people using as part of their greetings for Hari Raya, which this year falls on 3 May. The phrase translates as “please forgive me for any wrongs I have or may have committed against you.” This is not an empty formula. Far from it. It is a sign of humility, a realization we are all imperfect humans who fall short of consistent behaviour and can cause offense, or harm someone, intentionally or unintentionally. We need forgiveness just as we forgive others.
These are examples of the many similarities in the teachings of all the world religions practised in Singapore. In addition to humility and forgiveness, other substantive values common to all are: acceptance, compassion, love, mutual respect and tolerance.
As we approach Hari Raya, let us all celebrate we live in a country which is respectful of all religions and of those who practise them just as much as it is respectful of those who practise no religion.
It is a pleasure for me to wish all our Muslim members, friends and all my Muslim colleagues a joyful Hari Raya celebration with family and friends.
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri! Maaf Zahir Dan Batin.
Yours faithfully
