Dear
Members and Friends
There are lots of misconceptions
about Work Life Harmony (WLH).
Some misguided people think it
is simply enough for employers
to give and keep giving more –
like more free fruit or ice
cream - and peace will forever
reign in the workplace. Others
mistakenly think WLH is the
responsibility of management
teams alone. Far from it.
WLH is the responsibility of
everyone in a company to
co-create and co-sustain. It is
an integral part of a positive
workplace culture (PWC) which
helps businesses achieve optimal
commercial success. A PWC is one
in which no one is abused,
discriminated against, sexually
harassed or undermined at work.
Where agreed values and
behaviours are practised by
everyone and where penalties for
non-compliance are applied
regardless of seniority and
revenue generation. Where hiring
and promotion are merit based
and where those who want to
expand their knowledge and
skills are enabled to do so. The
WLH components of PWC are where
no one is expected to be on call
24/7 or to answer after hours
emails except in an emergency.
Where flexible work arrangements
are available because the KPI is
the quality and timeliness of
output not the number of hours
worked.
Last Friday my
colleagues and I in the Alliance
for Action (AfA) on WLH launched
a series of useful resources for
companies to consider. These are
all designed to help companies
develop and sustain WLH and PWC.
All the resources are available
at the TAFEP web site under
Resources, Work Life Harmony.
Check them out and let me
know what you think.
Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
