Dear
Members and Friends
There is much to celebrate in
the Prime Minister’s National
Day Rally Speech delivered on 29
August. Discrimination at the
workplace will be illegal when
the current TAFEP guidelines are
enshrined in law. Not only is
this the right thing to do, the
planned approach is the best one
for all parties too.
Conciliation and mediation will
be the main ways disputes are
dealt with leaving legal
recourse as a last resort.
Balancing this were the
Prime Minister’s comments about
EP and S pass holders.
Requirements will be tightened
over time to ensure EP and S
pass applicants are of the right
quality to strengthen team
Singapore. The importance of
keeping Singapore open to
investment and the talent needed
to complement our own was
clearly restated.
It was
encouraging to hear MOM is
studying how to improve the
working conditions and
protections for delivery and
other workers. Again, we need to
do right by all the people who
enable our lives. As I said in a
recent response to a question in
The Business Times “We say we
want a more equal society. We
have to be prepared to pay for
it.”
Cheering too were
the Prime Minister’s comments on
racial harmony with planned
legislation in the form of a
Maintenance of Racial Harmony
Bill. Once enacted, this will
protect and strengthen our
multi-culturalism and outlaw
poisonous racist abuse and
racism. Majulah Singapura!
Have a productive week
ahead!
Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
