Dear Members and Friends

Today’s Presidential Election in the United States is perhaps the most consequential of the last 75 years. It has been both ironic and painful to watch as the chief initiator and sponsor of the post-1945 world order has spent this entire Administration undermining it. More than that, the Administration’s gleeful contempt for multilateral institutions and the international rules-based order makes life much harder and less safe for everyone. Denying climate change does not help anyone. It certainly does not make America great again.

Usually, only about 55% of American citizens exercise their right to vote in Presidential Elections because voting is not compulsory. The turnout so far in terms of postal voting has been at a record high. I hope that is sustained today given all that has happened under the present Administration and, in particular, everything that is still happening thanks to Covid-19 and the economic fallout it is causing.

Black lives do matter because all lives matter. The fact that this even has to be advocated for in the world’s largest economy in 2020 is utterly disgraceful.

The world needs a markedly different tone, different words and different actions from the U.S. The world needs collaborative leadership not division and selfishness. The world needs leaders who curate fit for purpose domestic policy rather than blaming other countries for all their ills. The world needs reformed, multilateral institutions which are fit for purpose for today’s inter-connected and inter-dependent world. Let’s hope a majority of electoral college votes reflect these aspirations.

Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
Chief Executive
