Dear Members and Friends

5 years ago, we launched our business awards for collaborative innovation because so many SMEs were finding it culturally difficult to collaborate. This was holding back innovation and business growth. The key reasons were not knowing what information to share with potential collaborators coupled with a real concern that they would be taken advantage of by, or lose out to, competitors. I’m glad to say more SMEs have got past those fears and are collaborating because they’ve found it is the quickest way to innovate. Join them and tell your stories by participating in the 2020 SICC Awards. www.siccawards.com.sg

Keep reading for a short article from our member Dow which illustrates the necessity and the power of collaboration to spur innovation.

Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
Chief Executive

Collaborative Innovation to the Rescue

The increase in the number of natural disasters around the world provides proof of the impact of climate change. The latest data shows carbon emissions continue to rise and at record levels.

Businesses are now responding to the call for action. More are reducing and reusing resources and developing sustainable products. Collaborating with others in the value chain is the logical next step in their sustainability journey. It can help reduce carbon emissions through innovative business models and synergistic efforts in leveraging each other’s resources and strengths. There are many success stories which underscore this value chain collaboration to drive true sustainability. We would like to highlight one in the hope more industries in Singapore can do the same.

The used sports shoes that we throw away typically end up in a landfill or are incinerated. What if we could recycle them with purpose? This was the goal of the sports market value chain to collaborate to give new life to used sports shoes. Supported by SportSG, an island wide shoe collection initiative was recently completed as a pilot project. The base and middle layer of the collected used shoes are converted into granules which are used for rubberized jogging tracks. This collaboration has helped reduce waste. Why don’t you do something to recycle with purpose?
