Dear Members and Friends

Last week we commemorated Singapore’s Bicentennial in an appropriate way for a business chamber. We collaborated on an event with BritCham, Singapore to celebrate the internationalization of business. Click here for more details. We chose BritCham both because of SICC’s British roots – the Chamber was founded by a group of British traders based in Singapore - and because of the key role Britain has played in the Singapore story since 1819.

The focus on celebrating the role of business over the last 200 years is because a vibrant economy has always been existential for Singapore from trading post in 1819 to today’s global city.

Singapore has facilitated the two way flow of business - inward investment by foreign companies and outward expansion by local companies - since 1819 because of its free port status which encouraged businesses to set up shop in the first place.

The founders of our Chamber came together in 1837 to advocate against the East India Company’s plans to remove Singapore’s free port status. They made their case and won.

Just imagine if they and this Chamber had been unsuccessful. The founders would have lost their shirts. The Settlement of Singapore would not have developed and the Singapore story would have been very different. It’s fair to say none of us would be here today.

At a time when free trade and the rules based order is under threat from nationalists and protectionists, it is good to reflect on the positive benefits free trade and trade rules have brought and continue to bring Singapore. Just like the founders of this Chamber who stood up for free trade, we must now do the same. #SGBicentennial.
