Dear Members and
Friends
This
week we celebrate Singapore’s
54th National Day and the
country’s Bicentennial. The
story from Singapore to
Singaporean is an evolving one
which each of us writes every
day by our actions or lack
thereof. We have so much to be
grateful for in this most
unusual country: peace, racial
harmony, religious freedom,
including the freedom not to
practise a religion, personal
safety, cultural diversity and a
business-friendly eco-system.
None of these assets can or
should be taken for granted.
National Day is a good time to
celebrate them.
We’ve all
got plenty of work to do to
sustain a harmonious society as
we saw last week when an
insensitive advert was reacted
to by a racist video. We’ve all
got plenty of work to do to make
our workplaces more inclusive of
differently abled people. We
still have to discard ageism in
the workforce and end the legal
discrimination of our LGBTQ
fellow men and women. We need to
be able to debate issues without
denigrating others and be able
to agree to disagree. We need a
more gracious society online and
off line. These should be what
our founding foreign minister
Mr. S. Rajaratnam called our
“democracy of deeds”. So, as we
celebrate our achievements this
National Day, let’s act on the
areas for improvement listed
above.
My team and I wish
each of you a very happy
National Day 2019. Majulah
Singapura!
Yours
sincerely
Victor Mills
Chief Executive
