Dear Members and Friends,
Last Saturday, I attended the first of
two workshops on integration organized
by the National Integration Council
(NIC). The multi-racial participants
were from all walks of life. What struck
me most was how similar our views are on
the importance of integrating new
arrivals into our businesses and
community.
I promised to start a Chamber-wide
conversation on integration to learn
from you what best practices you use to
achieve positive outcomes for all your
teams and for your business. Drop me a
note at
[email protected] with your
experiences and best practices. This is
all in preparation for an event later
this year on integration, on what works,
what to avoid and what we all need to do
to achieve a positive outcome for
everyone. This is how SICC will
celebrate the great work of NIC as it
marks its 10th anniversary in 2019.

Arguably, two things are essential
for integration. The new arrival must
want to integrate and must be welcomed
for integration to happen. I know what
I’m talking about. I, like many of you,
am an immigrant and am proud to be a
naturalized citizen of Singapore. Since
I first came here in 1985, I have
received a warm welcome from 99% of
Singaporeans and residents. I have done
and will continue to do my part. I’ve assimilated because
I wanted to. I’ve been helped by the
fact that my wife is Singaporean by
birth and her family welcomed me from
day one. My colleagues at work welcomed me
too.
Integrating immigrants into
our society, whether they are long term
residents and potential citizens or here
for the short term, is key to the
continued success of our economy and
this special country of ours. It is also
a key element of Singapore’s
exceptionalism and something to be
appreciated and fostered.
Have a
great week ahead.
Warmest regards
Victor Mills
Chief Executive
