Dear Members and Friends
As Singapore celebrates the 52nd anniversary of its independence this week, it is time, once again, to give thanks.
Many thanks to each of you, to your companies and to all your teams for building businesses which help sustain Singapore’s vibrant economy. A growing economy is the key precondition for the well-being of every society and that is especially true for a city state like Singapore. That is precisely why we have a business-friendly government. Cause for celebration too.
We know we are all lucky to live and work in Singapore. We know there are big challenges to manage but all of them provide many opportunities to evolve business models, continually learn individually and collectively in order to grow and to succeed. Here are just two:
Human capital is our only resource. We all need to mean it when we say: “people are our greatest asset”. Too often it is a trite statement with no follow through, no meaning and, therefore, no positive impact. Now is the time for all companies to practice competency based recruitment focused on attitude, character, skills and potential. It saves time and money and produces a greater chance of corporate success and personal fulfilment (a.k.a.engagement).
The circular economy is another opportunity which I recommend you all consider as you plan next year’s budget or review your business strategy. A collaborative focus on the varied opportunities associated with the circular economy offer considerable scope for all of us in business.
Happy Birthday Singapore! Majulah Singapura!
Best regards
Victor Mills Chief Executive
