The ASEAN Series: Thailand

6 August 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Webinar

It was a real pleasure to host the second instalment of this year’s ASEAN Series of webinars in collaboration with Chamber member Control Risks and partner ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This series is an initiative of the Chamber’s member-exclusive ASEAN Interest Group.

Our focus today was on another key market where many of our members have significant business interests: the Kingdom of Thailand. Guest speaker, Mr. Harrison Cheng, Associate Director and Lead Analyst for Thailand, Control Risks provided the audience with a short-term outlook of Thailand’s social and political developments and what these mean for businesses and investors. He also made practical suggestions as to how businesses can mitigate risk. Harrison’s presentation was followed by that of Dr. Michael Montesano, Senior Visiting Fellow and Coordinator of the Thailand and Myanmar Studies Programmes, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, who provided listeners with a longer term view of the ongoing developments and trends in Thailand. He shared his analysis of the new conservative and liberal forces in Thai society and the very dominant role of large Thai conglomerates in the economy.

Our thanks to Harrison and Michael for sharing their views and providing insights in response to questions from participants. The Chamber looks forward to partnering Control Risks and ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in the next ASEAN Series webinar on 24 September when we will shift our focus to Vietnam.
