Diversity and Inclusion at Shell

On 11 June 2019, our guest speaker Ms Lyn R. Lee, Chief D&I Officer at Shell, together with her colleague, Ms Jane Low, Shell’s Global Learning Advisors (Commercial & Leadership Practice) shared insights with fellow chamber members on Shell’s journey in embracing diversity.

Lyn elaborated on how Shell’s DI& strategy has evolved (and still evolving) over the past few decades. Its current focus areas are accelerating gender balance, driving workplace inclusion of people with disabilities and LGBT+ as well as destigmatising mental health.

With a firm belief that balance means business and that diversity drives financial performance, it was clear to the management team that there is a business case for diversity and inclusion.  Shell’s D&I strategic intent is driven by four key pillars: Visible leadership; Targets & Plans; Inclusive Culture and Brand & Reputation which results in enhanced employee engagements and business performance.

The speakers also touched on Shell’s redefinition of Asian Leadership and Talent and the need to uncover Asian mindsets in order to develop Asian leaders to be strong global leaders.

In all, a diverse team led by inclusive leader and supporting policies would able to unleash business value and help to build a healthy and high performing organisation.

A big “Thank You” to Lyn and Jane for taking time to share their journey at Shell with us!
